Livermore Valley
A Man in FullLivermore Valley is the open landscape beyond Santa Rita, and during the earthquake it becomes more than a distant view: its darkened plain and newly altered ground frame Conrad’s first movement out of the prison. The valley’s sudden stillness contrasts with the damaged jail and the uncertain escape ahead.
Setting and Surroundings
From the jail yard, the valley stretches beyond the prison toward Pleasanton and the hills to the north. Route 580 lies to the south. In the aftermath of the earthquake, this geography is visible but not reassuring: the highway shows no lights, and the power outage has erased the familiar illumination across the landscape.
The Earthquake’s Imprint
The quake leaves a low, sheer escarpment running north to south beneath the West Greystone building, through D Pod, and across the jail grounds. The rupture turns the prison’s surroundings into visibly changed terrain. The building itself has been thrust upward on one side; its gravel roof is split down the middle and tilted at an abnormal angle. From the yard, Conrad can see the new cliff and, beyond it, the broad plain of the Livermore Valley.
Darkness and Open Sky
The valley’s night scene combines emergency activity with an unusual quiet. A gasoline-powered generator throbs nearby while deputies’ flashlight beams move across the yard; sirens and a fire-engine horn sound from the direction of Pleasanton. Yet, without electricity, the moon and stars dominate the sky. The plain appears suddenly clear and peaceful, even as the quake’s force remains palpable in the bodies of those who have endured it.
A Landscape of Uncertain Escape
The valley becomes the setting for Conrad’s first steps away from the damaged prison. After helping Five-O reach the yard, he leaves him behind and runs alongside the escarpment, with only the vague idea of reaching Route 580 or Pleasanton and hitchhiking. The ground hurts his bare feet, and his lungs and injured back begin to trouble him, but fear and adrenaline keep him moving. The open landscape offers direction rather than a destination: Conrad does not know where he is going or what will happen next.
